Download and manual installation of Java™ 2 Runtime Environment (JRE) for Linux
This procedure downloads and installs an executable program. During these phases it is necessary to remain connected to Internet.
Note: the instructions given below are for the installation of JRE 1.4.2_04. If you install another version, make sure that you change the version number when you enter the commands from the terminal. . Download per Linux
- From the terminal, enter: su
- Enter the root password.
- Go to the directory where you wish to install the program, entering: cd <name of directory path>
if you want to install the software in the /usr/java/ digitate: cd /usr/java/
Note on the root access: to install JRE is a position at system level, /usr/local for example, first you have to gain access as ‘root’ to gain the necessary permits. If you don’t have root access, install JRE in your home directory or in a subdirectory for which you have writing permits..
- Change the permit of the file downloaded to executable, entering:
chmod a+x j2re-1_4_2_04-linux-i586.bin
- Check that you have permission to execute the file, entering: ls -l
- Start the initialisation process, entering:
./j2re-1_4_2_04-linux-i586.bin
This command displays a license agreement. Read it. Press the spacebar to display the next page.
- JRE is installed in its own directory. In this example, it is installed in the /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04. When installation is complete, the word Done will appear
- JRE is installed in the subdirectory j2re1.4.2_(version number) under the current directory. In this case, it is installed in the /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04 directory. Check that the j2re1.4.2_04 subdirectory is under the current directory, entering j2re1.4.2_04: Is

- Go to the plug-in subdirectory in the Mozilla installation directory, entering:

- Create a symbolic connection to the ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so file, entering:
ln -s <directory di installazione di JRE>/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
Example:
- If Mozilla is installed in this directory:
/usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/
- and if JRE is installed in this directory:
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04
- From the terminal go to the browser plug-in director, entering: cd /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins
- Create a symbolic connection to Java Plug-in for the Mozilla browser, entering:
ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32
/libjavaplugin_oji.so .
- Start up the Mozilla browser or restart if it’s already in execution. Remember that, if other Mozilla components are in execution, such as Messenger, Composer or others, you will have to restart it.
- Go to Modify > Preferences. Select Enable Java from the Forward category >
Mozilla 1.2, Netscape 6 e versioni successive
- Go to the plug-in subdirectory in the Netscape installation directory, entering:
cd <Netscape>/plugins
- Create a symbolic connection to the ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so entering:
ln -s <JRE>/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
Example:
- If Netscape is installed in this directory:
/usr/lib/Netscape6/
- and if JRE is installed in this directory:
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04
- From the terminal go to the browser plug-in director, entering: cd /usr/lib/Netscape6/plugins
- Create a symbolic connection to Java Plug-in for the Mozilla browser, entering:
ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/plugin/i386/ns610
/libjavaplugin_oji.so .
- Start up the Mozilla browser or restart if it’s already in execution. Remember that, if other Mozilla components are in execution, such as Messenger, Composer or others, you will have to restart it.
- Go to Modify > Preferences. Select Enable Java from the Forward category >
